School Notes:

  • The Catholic character of CSB and SJU is shaped by the Benedictine communities that founded the colleges in the 19th century and continue to foster Benedictine Catholic values in the academic, spiritual and social life of the colleges. Today, Benedictine women and men remain actively involved in teaching and administration, and their prayerful presence in community life provides the stable sense of home for which CSB and SJU are so well known.
  • The heart of the CSB/SJU undergraduate experience is rooted in a lively and sustained engagement between students and faculty – in the classroom and beyond. Professors actively encourage and strongly support students to take responsibility for and own their education. Discussion-based classes and active learning teaching practices typify CSB/SJU classrooms and curricular challenges. Experiential educational opportunities in study abroad, service learning, internships and undergraduate research as well as learning communities and residential hall learning programs are central to a full CSB/SJU learning experience.
  • Together, the colleges sponsor many co-recreational athletic activities. Men and women utilize modern exercise facilities on both campuses, and students participate in a number of co-rec intramural and club sports. An extensive outdoor recreation program takes outdoor enthusiasts from both colleges to the best hiking, biking and paddling destinations in Minnesota and around the country.
  • SJU is located in central Minnesota, surrounded by 3,200 acres of pristine forests, prairies and lakes. The colleges are minutes away from the St. Cloud metropolitan area with a population of more than 100,000, while Minneapolis and St. Paul are 70 miles southeast on Interstate 94.
