School Notes:
- Athens State University is the oldest institution of higher education in Alabama 's state educationalsystem. The Institution was founded in 1822 by local citizens who purchased five acres of land, erected a building, and beganAthens Female Academy. Ownership of the school was transferred in 1842 to the Tennessee Conference of the Methodist Church .With the birth of the North Alabama Conference of the Methodist Church in 1870, the Institution came under the jurisdictionof that body.
- The University offers degree programs in the College of Arts and Sciences, Business, and Education.The College of Business is nationally accredited by the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs, and theCollege of Education is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
- Athens State University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association ofColleges and Schools. The institution awards the baccalaureate degree.
