Founded in 1836, Emory & Henry is the oldest college in Southwest Virginia. It is also one of the few colleges in the South to have operated more than 160 years under the same name and with the same affiliation: the United Methodist Church. Today, Emory & Henry is a vibrant, refreshing liberal arts college comprised of young men and women from around the world. Our students gain insight into global issues and politics, a knowledge of how society is shaped and governed, and a realization that they can affect positive change in their world.

  • Students complete a required liberal arts core curriculum that spans four years and emphasizes a global perspective on history, literature, and culture. Student participation is promoted through writing assignments, discussion, and an active approach to thinking and reasoning.
  • More than 50 extra and co-curricular clubs and organizations are active on Emory & Henry's campus, including student media and student government, academic and interest groups, honor societies, performance groups, religious organizations, an active outdoor club and fraternities and sororities.
  • Our campus encompasses 331 pristine acres in the village of Emory, Virginia, in the Virginia Highlands, one-half mile off Interstate 81 (exit 26) and 40 minutes from a major regional airport. The campus is within view of Virginia's two highest peaks, Mount Rogers and Whitetop Mountain, and is near the historic town of Abingdon, Virginia, home of the renowned Barter Theatre.
