This article discusses important factors to consider when evaluating and choosing a liberal arts college.Dickinson State University is a regional four-year institution within the North Dakota University System, whose primary role is to contribute to intellectual, social, economic and cultural development, especially to Southwestern North Dakota. The University’s mission is to provide high-quality, accessible programs, to promote excellence in teaching and learning; to support scholarly and creative activities; and to provide service relevant to the economy health and quality of life of the citizens of the State of North Dakota.

- The institution offers selected baccalaureate programs in the liberal arts and sciences, the fine arts, nursing, teacher education, business and technology, stressing scholarship and the habit of critical inquiry in fields of major interests. The institution offers a limited number of programs of less than four years. The liberal arts and sciences provide a sound curricular base as a foundation for the intellectual, cultural and professional development of the student. The professional, technical and occupational programs will continue to evolve to meet the needs of society.
- Dickinson State offers Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of University Studies, Bachelor of Science in Education, Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and Associate Degrees.
- Dickinson State is located in Dickinson, North Dakota, a city of 17,000, near the rugged and beautiful North Dakota Badlands and Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Outdoor recreational activities including hiking, biking, golfing, hunting, and fishing are located within minutes of campus. Dickinson is located along Interstate 94 and the community is served by commercial bus and air service for easy access.
- Dickinson State University is accredited since 1946 by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central (regional) Accrediting Association. The Teacher Education Program was recently reaccredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and both levels of our nursing program, associate and bachelor’s degrees, are accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) and approved by the North Dakota State Board of Nursing. The Music Program is recognized for its quality through the National Association of the Schools for Music.
